WE ARE ON - LOCK AND LOAD SINGAPORE!!!

LiveAID is back but we're recreating it as barmAID.

Bring it on and lock it in - 26th JULY.

Why?

We're doing GOOD people.

Let's not forget how fortunate we are with our lives, and how LESS fortunate others are in the world.

Our ‘sunshine’ tour of Cambodia in 2012 raised just over SGD 100,000. From the bottom of our hearts we thank everyone who raised, contributed, ate, drank and bought stuff they didn’t really need, so that we could provide much needed support to our friends in Kampung Chnang.

The amount we raised was a little in excess of what we needed to build the houses, so we’ve been able to do lots more than we originally anticipated. So, from our initial fundraising we have managed to buy:

36 houses – the main intent of our sojourn to exotic climes and the most we’ve ever built in one visit
Wells – 100 wells in Pursat and Kg Chnang provinces
Pig connection – 45 pairs of pigs

The wells are split between field wells and standard wells. As you can imagine, the need for fresh water outweighs any other basic requirement and the field wells provide much needed irrigation for the fields which are being cultivated as part of the villagers drive towards self-sufficiency. The field wells, we are assured, are the most important aspect of the work that Tabitha does next to the house-building itself. The standard wells are those which are drilled in the villages themselves and provide a fresh water supply for the families living there.

We’re saving lives every day!

So, last year a goodly number of the people joined us for our version of a “holiday of a lifetime” and spent a few days helping to change the lives of a few deserving folk in Kg. Chnang in rural Cambodia.

This years’ event which will take place between the 31st October and 3rd November.

In the amiable words of Sir Bob Geldof - "Give us your fucking money!"

We have commenced, in earnest, fund raising for "The Tupperware Tour" (more on that in a second) - and barmAID is one such event to achieve that outcome. And this year for this event we are joined in unison for not just Tabitha but also the amazing charity of Hope for Cambodia with our friends at Standard Chartered Bank and Henley Group.

We thank our friends and relish the journey we are about to embark on together.

The strap-line says it all;

"Give Cambodian Children Hope and a Home!"

So to the ask - we have 300 tickets being printed for what promises to be an amazing event.

We'll have 80's music all night, singing competitions, fancy dress competitions (get you leg warmers and mascara on), raffles, tour t-shirts - the LOT!

So please commit your commitment now by securing a place at THE event of 2013 by buying a ticket or 10 to barmAID on 26th July.

It's gonna get messy!

Finally, for the BT folk building houses this year, why is it called “The Tupperware Tour”? Well the story goes as follows - and this is a personal reflection from my great mate Ged;

There are many stories from the trip, but one stands out - Janne told us at the induction on Thursday. “Don’t throw your empty water bottles away” she said, “they can become containers for food and the like”. Well, last Saturday, when we’d had lunch, when we’d completed our emotional handover of the blankets for the families new homes, and we were packing up all the rubbish, a certain shy Cambodian lady was watching. She was watching the rubbish being collected and had her eyes on a simple plastic container which had been used as one of our lunch boxes. One of our team spotted this and handed it over, along with a knife and spoon. The sheer joy and happiness that came over that beautiful young lady’s face was an absolute picture (and I didn’t have my camera at the ready). It was as if she’d won the lottery! That simple plastic box was worth millions! It was a simple moment, but one which epitomises the situation that exists in rural Cambodia and a moment which totally explains why we do this and a memory which makes it all worthwhile. I don’t know about you, but I would love to make more people smile like that lady … so next year we all bring Tupperware boxes ok?

"2013 The Tupperware Tour!"

If you can't be there in person please donate what you can, seriously a little goes such a LONG way in Cambodia. We have set up the donation site here.

I thank you all in advance. But special mentions for barmAID have to go to;

Angela Katz - you are truly amazing.
Craig & Jane Armstrong - my 1+1=greater than 2 legends and friends.
Doug Peris - my partner in crime.
Mark Reeve - just keeps on giving (including OpaGangnam on a tuk tuk).
My BT CSR team for their support and guidance.
Victor at HooHa - the event owner, without you mate this would not exist.
My family for allowing me to have some "social work nights" to organise this event.

BUN IN THE OVEN! SHIT this should be on the food blog... or should it...?

Oh yes.

There is indeed life in the old dog yet.
There was I thinking I had sperm on Zimmer frames.
Apparently not - my boys are athletes! Sprinters! Runners! Marathon guys!

Woo Hoo!

Mary and I (well more so Mary) are pregnant - 12 weeks in readers.

No idea at moment - so it is indeed a he/she - the umbilical cord was wrapped around the wee ones lower regions not allowing our Dr to ascertain the sex.

I have to admit as a proud Dad I did challenge "are you sure that's the umbilical cord love, he is a my son - it looks about right?!"

Cough cough!

So as in the film 'Sliding Doors' it is indeed all change for this 44 year old and Mary 35 year old. Some great stats;

  1. We now have a combined 5-a-side football team
  2. Mary and I make 79 years old combined
  3. I'll be 62 when having my 1st glass of vino with Junior
  4. Ollie will be 21 when he/she is 10
  5. Amy will be 16 when he/she is 10
  6. F*CK ME
Anyways - to all, we are very excited - kids are having a field day - yes baby 'thing' - they can't wait. Amy's words yesterday were "is it off your tummy today?" - I think she wants baby time now! Sorry NOW!

Bring it on world!!!

Very excited!!!

Very happy!!!

'Tiny movements like tiny kicks
Tiny baby, a mother’s bliss
Can’t wait to give the tiny you
Huge hugs and lots of kisses too

What tiny dreams you might have now?
I would understand ..........'

Come on baby XXX,
Welcome to the world,
Come soon,
Come safely,
Come say HI!
Come to us!

We ALL are waiting!!!

I can't believe it - I have nothing to say. But someone does... (Part 1)

I know, I'll hand over to Ollie so he can do a blog of his trip to Penang.
Now there's a great idea.
Over to you No1. Son - Ollie's 1st blog!
Can't wait!

Hi! It's me! Well, first off, it has been a good week/camp. Of course, I missed my family and the usual things I do in Singapore like at a hawker eating Roast Pork and Char Siew, but I had tons of fun!

WARNING:- I am not able to put up all photos as my memory will be gone so i will mainly talk about it, also it will be long so relax!

Day 1:-
Well, off to airport! You may have seen my dad's recent blog about Sunday so I wont go into to much detail.

It was Lunch, Go to Starbucks, Bye Byes, Immigration, Flower Garden. Wait, what? Flowers? That is for my dad! Well here are some pics!

Nice right!

Next it was run to the gates! But no photos here....

Then on to plane and swoosh to Penang! We landed! Then we took our bus. Our bus was really cool. But this mad blog won't allow video so man!

We then ate at a food court called Viva. I ate Oriental Fried Rice and it was scrumptious!

There you go! Evidence! But then we went to the Baan Talay which is a nice, cosy home stay! I loved it! It was cool! Here is a quick snap!

Day 2:-

It was fun! We did a whole tour of Georgetown with a very nice tour guide named Teresa. She showed us the Kapitan Kelling Mosque, a Chinese temple within the Teo Chew (i forgot the spelling!) Association, the Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple and St. George Church. Also we went on Rickshaws and we ad a tour of Fort Cornwallis.

The Mosque

The Chinese Temple

The Hindu Temple

The Church

And you guessed it! Fort Cornwallis!

Then we swam at a nice place called the Naza Talyya Hotel and also we had dinner there! (Sneaky me but i had Fish and Chips!)

Then zzzzzzzzz....

Day 3:-

Long day short-
Uplands School (We did a Cooking Class, a Movie Making Class and a Swimming Lesson)
Penang Butterfly Farm (it was beautiful!)
Adventure Zone (YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!)
Dinner at the Arati Villas Restaurant (Yum!)
Art Workshop at B Home Art Studio (I made an 80's Gangnam Style Guy)

Well, this blog is WAY too big to fit one blog so I will open up a blog perhaps tomorrow for more Penang Camp!

Bye!
Ollie

Oh no we've lost Ollie...

Sad and Happy, Happy and Sad.

What to say!

Ollie off today for 6 days for his school field trip to Penang in Malaysia. Blimey when I was his age I used to go camping at Kingsdown, Kent on the white cliffs in a flipping tent, in the howling wind and rain. He gets to go here...

He's off to spice gardens, mosques, cooking classes, butterfly gardens, kids clubs, hawker street food sessions and the like - poles apart from me in me tent - mwah! He'll be seeing this stuff;

And this...

And this...

Me...

So very happy for him to go with his mates, but also very sad to see my boy go - in fact it was a very somber drive home from the airport having said good bye to him. You'll be missed Ollie-Boo! Have fun and come home safe matey! We're waiting for you!

We arrived at the airport early to have some lunch.

Standing in a non-existant queue waiting for service at some Thai joint, clearly completely invisible to the servers and you know me - right that's that they just lost 4 customers. And how lucky we were they ignored us as we spotted Penang Culture, a brand new restaurant opened and ready to serve us - and how bizarre that that is exactly there the Ollie is off to - Penang, Malaysia.

Clearly an omen!

Check it out.

Here he is practising his Malay for his trip.

Amy says hi too, but Mary can't stop long enough from eating it seems ha ha. Mind you the food was so so nice how could you not. Delicious! Mary stuffing down her tom yam.

Or should that be Tom Yum!

Then out comes the amazing dish that I ordered - Thai style deep fried crispy chicken with spicy shaved green apple sauce. Oh my it was amazing! This is the beauty of food from Penang - very similar to Singapore it is a melting pot of different cultures grown from sea trade, and of course therefore a complete mix of food types too. Just wonderful - what a menu - you should have a go at this place if you happen to be in Singapore. This will be going in to book No2 if I can work out how to cook it.

Here is the crew ready to depart.

It's a still photo so you miss the jigging about of the 13 VERY excited 11 year olds off on their Malaysian adventure for 5 days.

Queuing, queuing - chatting, chatting - jigging, jigging!

Oh no says Amy, what am I going to do without my big brother for a week.

Nearly off. One more group shot and off we go to immigration. Nearly bye bye time, boo hoo!

Is there a similarity here - above and below?

It's like they're taking over the airport isn't it? Look at them.

Again some similarity above and below?

Which one's Ollie?

That's it - the main man is off, last gate, last wave, a peck on the cheek and a hug (I think he was embarrassed to have a snog in front of his mates). And boom he's gone! No more Ollie for a week. And he is also the first Kennett to use his passport with our new Permanent Residency of Singapore in it.

Final thing as we're saying goodbye - was a handover of a certificate for achievement for Ollie.

Award for; "Applying himself really well to the homework research assignment for is I believe unit."

Go go Ollie - what a morning phew!

Have fun Ollie Boo and come home safe to us - we miss you!!!
